How do we choose the right projector for you?

When we discuss your install, we take a number of things into consideration before making recommendations. As well as choosing the right type of tech and the image quality you’re looking for, we’ll need to consider where you’re going to be using the projector.

One factor will be throw distance, which means how far away from your screen the projector will sit. Then we’ll consider optical zoom capabilities; this feature allows you to enlarge or minimise the screen. Lens shift allows you to move the screen around without sacrificing quality or having to change your physical set up.

We’ll factor in budget and all these features when we recommend your products.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a projector?

A projector is an electronic device that projects an image onto a surface. Most projectors work by shining light beams through a transparent lens. Many new and contemporary projectors actually use laser beams to project the images directly. The projected image is usually shown on a wall, projector screen or other large, flat surface for the best results. Projectors can produce both still and moving images. Often, they are used as part of a presentation or for functions such as displaying films or enlarging slides.

Can a projector replace a TV?

This really depends on how much TV you watch, what you’ll be using the projector for, and the venue or location where you’ll be using it.

Some of the benefits of a projector over a TV include portability and display size – typically projectors are used on large screens or surfaces, making them perfect for displaying images or videos for a larger audience.

A projector works best when there’s not a lot of outside light sources. If you’re thinking of replacing a screen or TV set with a projector, give our team a call to discuss and assess what will work best.

Are there different types of projector?

Yes, there are two major common categories for projectors for general use – Digital Light Processing (DLP) and Liquid Crystal Display (LCD).

DLP projectors are either one or three-chip. Each chip contains millions of tiny mirrors which reflect light, creating the projected image. Accordingly, one-chip projectors are capable of displaying around 16 million colours, while the higher three-chip projectors can show more than 35 million colours. The mirrors being so close together within the projector means there is less visible space between pixels in the projected image.

LCD projectors use mirrors that are polarised. With this system of mirrors, beams of red, green, and blue are split and then re-merged via a light prism. An LCD panel controls and alters how saturated or bright each colour is in the final projected image.

When it comes to choosing the right projector, you need to factor in what you’ll be displaying, and where you’ll be projecting. You also need to think about display functions like vertical lens shift, horizontal lens shift, throw distance and vertical offset.

What is a projector screen?

A projector screen is a specialised surface used to display the best quality projections. Projector screens are large, flat, and usually supported by a structure to keep them stable and visible to a larger audience.

Are there different types of projector screen?

There are several different kinds of projector screens, with different qualities and screen size. Which one you need will depend on your project requirements, what you’re projecting, who will be viewing it, where you’re projecting, and plenty of other factors. Some of the common projector screen types include Electric Projector Screens, Fixed Frame Screens, Manual Projector Screens, Portable Projector Screens, and Inflatable Projector Screens.

At Music Gear Installations, our team will assess your venue and requirements and recommend the right projector screen type for you. If you need, we can also come and install it for you.

How does a screen projector work?

A screen projector propels light onto a surface – one of the projector screen types mentioned above – to display an image. Depending on the quality of your projector, the projector type, the surface, or screen you’re using and the venue, the projection quality may differ. Some users choose to pair their screen projector with an AV surround sound system for a home theatre experience. We suggest consulting our team for recommendations on the best screen projector set up for you.

How to install a projector screen on a wall

There are lots of factors and potential issues to consider when installing a projector screen onto a wall. You need to ensure you’ve got the right projector and screen type, for a start. There are a number of choices that will be impacted by your usage, venue and more. Then, you’ll need to make sure you’ve chosen the right location for image quality, light diffusion, light pollution and, if applicable, sound quality. You need to make sure the image is projected onto the centre of the screen. The type of projector mount you require also differs depending on usage and location – for example, some projects require a ceiling mount.

To make sure you get the best out of your equipment and choose the right set up and method for your screen projector installation, get in touch with the Music Gear Installation team for a chat. We’ll discuss what you’re using the system for, take a look at your venue and suggest the best tools and design. If required, we can also attend your site and install everything for you, guaranteeing perfect results every time.
